North Staffs Mind is a locally run and financed charity, which provides a number of professionally run services for people with mental health problems. The Community Support Services offers people with enduring mental health problems the opportunity to develop friendship with a volunteer and to attend regular social clubs and outings.

The Community Support Services run a number of schemes in the North Staffordshire area. We hope to attract people who will benefit from one to one or organised activities. The projects aim to help those suffering from mental health problems through the sharing of everyday pursuits i.e shopping, walking, sports or just simple conversation with a friend. We hope to help people gain confidence, self esteem and alleviate some of the loneliness our clients may be suffering.

The projects are staffed by paid workers and volunteers. Our volunteers have no special expertise - just a genuine commitment to share a few hours of their time each week. Volunteers receive full training and on-going support.

Date/time: To Be Arranged
Event:  Use Your Problem Solving Skills to Help Disabled People
Location: Community House, 46-50 East Parade, Harrogate
Information about event

People with craft or engineering skills and a little time to spare are being actively sought to support the needs of disabled people in the Harrogate District by joining a new panel of volunteers for Remap.

The sort of work Remap panellists produce varies enormously. Problem solving is at the heart of their success. Recently a customer suffering from Parkinson’s disease found he could no longer open the fridge door or operate the controls of his washing machine. The local Remap panel met to discuss the problem, came up with a solution, and panellists created a new handle to fix to the fridge, and also replaced the washing machine controls with large knobs that the client could manage.

The meeting is open for anyone to attend, in particular those who are good at problem solving and have a craft or engineering skill, and interested local health professionals.

The local group, whose establishment is being supported by Harrogate and Ripon Councils for Voluntary Service and Harrogate Borough Council, already has a number of potential projects so it is looking to be up and running as soon as possible.

Date/time: 12 - 31 Jan
Event:  e-campaigning from home
Location: Home
Information about event

Our e-campaigning system identifies your MP, MSP or AM and provides a model email that you can adapt then send to your political representative in a matter of seconds. Quick, simple and cheap, it can make a real difference for people with asthma. For example Welsh MP Julie Morgan will today (12 January 2005) introduce a Private Members Bill in Parliament that, if passed, would give the National Assembly for Wales the power to make public places and workplaces in Wales smoke-free.

However, the decision to pass the Welsh Assembly bill will be made in Westminster by MPs from across Britain, and Asthma UK campaigners have
encouraged people who want to see smoke-free public places in Wales to join an online petition to lobby their MPs, asking them to support the bill.

'This bill is vital for protecting the health of people with and without asthma,' said Martin Dockrell, Asthma UK's Assistant Director of Policy & Public Affairs. 'The Welsh Assembly has already agreed that if it had the powers it would want to take action to introduce smoke-free public places. However, the success of this bill will also put pressure on the government to take action on implementing a comprehensive smoking ban in England.'

'Our e-campaigning page makes it quick and easy to lobby your MP and add your voice to the campaign.'

Event:  African Caribbean Strategic Health Network Seminar
Location: Newhampton Arts Centre,
Dunkley Street,
Whitmore Reans,
Wolverhampton
Information about event

Got something to say about the health issues that affect the African Caribbean community?

Come along to our seminar on Saturday the 22nd January where we'll be exploring these issues.

We also hope to focus on the role of patient and public involvement in health services. The event is all about raising the profile of PPI forums - Public and Patient Involvement forums based within hospitals - within the black and minority ethnic community.

The event is also about the health legacy we are leaving for future generations.

The event will be centred around celebrating Martin Luther King Jnr and the ideals he held regarding ensuring all people had equal access to services including health and social care.

The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals PPI Forum has been investigating the provision of services to people suffering from Sickle Cell Anaemia and Thalassemia. A piece of research conducted in 2003 by the Patient Experience/Diversity Officer and the PALS Officer has also been obtained and discussed. There are significant problems engaging with service users for interviews/surveys and a local support group (The Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Support Project) has been approached for assistance with designing and administering a survey. A report is planned for March 2005.

BBC Radio Sheffield's 'Plant it - Save it' Campaign is gathering pace with several organised tree-planting days for people to go along and plant a tree for free during 2005 as part of the Year of the Volunteer.

You're invited to attend two tree-planting days. The first event is at Podmore Wood in Totley on February the 12th and 26th and at Wincobank Wood in Sheffield on March the 1st and 5th. The Totley site is owned by the Shffield Town Trust and is being organised in partnership with the Sheffield University Officer Training Corps and will result in 7,000 being planted. The Wincobank Wood site is off Sandstone Crescent and is a new woodland area.

Tree planting at both sites will help create new woodland areas in Sheffield with the help of Radio Sheffield listeners, local residents and other groups.

You can come along and meet volunteers and find out more about the work of VSO. The average age of a VSO volunteer is 38 and most placements are for two years. We are a leading development charity with almost 2,000 skilled professionals currently working in over 40 countries. Anyone aged between 20 and 75 years old can join if they possess a formal qualification and some work experience. Regular postings are for two years and volunteers are provided with accommodation and a local level allowance as well as air fares and insurance.

VSO is actively recruiting volunteers all the time. The range of jobs is vast, and includes small business advisors, teachers, social workers, health professionals, management consultants, marine biologists, accountants and farmers.

Event:  Woodland management - hazel coppicing
Location: Knightwood Leisure Centre, Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh, Hampshire
Information about event

'Friends of the Parks' are a group of local residents from Valley Park and Knightwood Park working to help protect and improve the local environment for everyone to enjoy. In the early 1990's only 2% of Hampshire's 23,000 hectares of semi-natural coppice woodland was being cut on a planned rotation of cutting.

Since this time this figure has increased and Friends of the Parks are delighted to be involved with the reintroduction of this craft in our local woods. Coppicing has historically set the composition and structure of much of Hampshire's ancient semi-natural woodland.

Event:  Green and Away Environmental Conference Centre
Location: 8 miles north of Gloucester in an organic hay meadow
Information about event

Each summer we build and run Europe's only environmentally-sound outdoor conference centre. For our season in July and August 2004 we are looking for willing helpers to work with us for part or all of the season to build, operate and take down the Green and Away conference centre and village.

In return for your enthusiasm, goodwill and hard work, you will have the chance to live in beautiful countryside among friendly people, eating and drinking well, and making an important contribution to the work of the environmental and social change sector. There are opportunities to help us with setting up the Green and Away conference centre and village, helping with running the various events, and with taking everything down at the end of the season. Green & Away is a charity (number 1083827) which exists to support social and environmental change.
